How it's calculated

For each of the 18 attacking types, the calculator multiplies its effect against your first type by its effect against your second type (or just uses the single value for a mono-type Pokémon), then groups the 18 results by the outcome:

weak to = count(multiplier ≥ 2) · resists = count(0 < multiplier < 1) · immune to = count(multiplier = 0)

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a Pokémon's weakness count worked out?

Every one of the 18 attacking types is checked against the typing you enter, and grouped by the resulting multiplier. "Weak to" counts every attacking type at 2x or 4x; "resists" counts ½x and ¼x; "immune to" counts 0x; everything else is neutral.

Why does a dual type sometimes have fewer weaknesses than a single type?

Because the two types' effects stack by multiplication, not addition -- a type that's 2x against one of the pair and ½x against the other cancels out to a neutral 1x, and a type that's ½x against both stacks down to a full ¼x resistance. A second type can cancel out a first type's weaknesses as easily as it can add new ones.

What's a "4x weakness," specifically?

It's when a single attacking type is super effective (2x) against both of a dual-type Pokémon's types at once, so the two 2x multipliers stack to 4x -- quadruple damage from one move. It's the most dangerous matchup a dual type can have, and it shows up separately from an ordinary 2x weakness in the breakdown above.
