How it's calculated
Every attacking type has a fixed multiplier against each of the 18 defending types -- 2x, ½x, 0x or the default 1x. Against a Pokémon with two types, the two individual multipliers are multiplied together, not averaged:
combined multiplier = multiplier(attacking, type 1) × multiplier(attacking, type 2)
That single rule is the whole engine behind every calculator on this site -- the weakness calculator runs it for all 18 attacking types at once against one typing, and the coverage calculator runs it for up to four attacking types against all 171 possible typings.
Worked example
A Water-type move against a Fire/Rock Pokémon (a typing like Kabutops's reversed, or Magcargo's own Fire/Rock): Water is super effective against both of the defender's types on their own.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do 4x, 2x, ½x, ¼x and 0x mean?
They're damage multipliers applied to a move's base power. 2x is "super effective," ½x is "not very effective," and 0x means the move does nothing at all -- it can never land. 4x and ¼x only happen against a dual-type Pokémon, when both of its types are hit the same way (both super effective, or both resisted).
How is a dual-type Pokémon's multiplier calculated?
The attacking type's multiplier against each of the defender's types is worked out separately, then the two are multiplied together -- not added or averaged. A type that's 2x against one of the defender's types and 2x against the other stacks to 4x; 2x against one and ½x against the other cancels out to a neutral 1x.
Is this the move's type or the attacking Pokémon's type?
It's the move's type that matters, not the Pokémon using it -- a Fire-type Pokémon using a Water-type move is calculated as a Water-type attack. A move dealing damage of the user's own type gets a separate 1.5x Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB) on top of the type multiplier shown here, which this calculator doesn't include since it's a property of the attacker's own typing, not the matchup itself.
Why is there a Fairy type, and why does it matter for Steel and Dragon?
Fairy was added in Generation 6 (X/Y, 2013) specifically to check Dragon-type sweeps -- Fairy is immune to Dragon and resists Fighting/Dark, while Dragon has no way to hit Fairy back. The same update also changed Steel: it gained a resistance to the new Fairy type but lost its old resistances to Ghost and Dark, which is why some older type-chart references you'll find elsewhere are out of date.
Does this apply to every Pokémon game?
Yes, for every mainline game from Generation 6 onward (X/Y through the current generation) -- this is the chart used today. Generations 1-5 used a chart without the Fairy type and with Steel resisting Ghost and Dark; this site covers the current, standard 18-type chart only.
